Program Overview
If the sound of an engine makes your heart race, College of Western Idaho’s (CWI) Automotive Technician program is calling you. Technicians will tell you that the best education is one that gives you a wealth of experience. That is what makes our program so unique. In the first year, you will learn all auto systems, including brakes, fuel injection, electronic controls, automatic transmissions, scanning equipment, and onboard diagnostics, as well as the latest computer systems. Your second year is all about experience. You will learn on the job in several local dealerships and shops, using the latest equipment and working with experienced personnel as mentors.

What kind of degree(s) can you earn?
- Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS) – approximately two years
- Advanced Technical Certificate (ATC) – approximately 16 months
- Technical Certificate (TC) – approximately one year
- Postsecondary Technical Certificate (PTC*) – usually less than one year
- Advanced Postsecondary Technical Certificate (PTC*) – usually less than one year
* PTC - Automotive Technology: Maintenance & Light Repair:
The Postsecondary Technical Certificate in Maintenance and Light Repair, offered in partnership with Ford Motor Company, offers a quick, low-intensity opportunity for students to enter the field of automotive service. Students will acquire the necessary skills to perform regular maintenance, minor or light repairs, and parts installation on automobiles and light trucks.
What else should you know?
Before being accepted into the program a student must attend a program orientation.
All students accepted must submit a drug or alcohol test at the beginning of the program at their own expense.
